Augusta Lynx Press Release
Despite a goal and three assists out of Louis Goulet, two goals and an assist by Jonathan Gagnon, and three helpers from Martin Lapointe, the Augusta Lynx still ended up with a 5-4 overtime loss to the South Carolina Stingrays on Thursday night in front of 2,024 fans at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.
Daisuke Obara got the ball rolling for the Lynx with his first tally in an Augusta uniform at 10:22 of the first period from Goulet and Lapointe. South Carolina would respond when Shawn Skiehar scored on a wrister from the right wing at 15:17, beating Gregg Naumenko over the left shoulder to draw the game at 1-1 after the first period.
Jonathan Gagnon opened the scoring in the second with a pair of goals, both from Lapointe and Goulet. The first marker came at 1:14 and the second at 5:12 to put Augusta up 3-1. But Ed Courtney and Curtis Huppe drew the Stingrays even at 3-3 before Goulet scored at 15:21 from Gagnon and Jarrett Thompson to give Augusta the lead once again at the end of the second stanza.
The Lynx were determined to make the one goal lead stand up, and even pressured relief netminder Kirk Daubenspeck for a two-goal lead. Daubenspeck, who replaced David Brumby after two periods, shut the door on Augusta, and finally at 19:15 with an extra attacker on the ice, Marty Clapton shelved a rebound in front of the Lynx net to tie the game and send it to overtime. In the OT, once again Kevin Spiewack scored at 2:18 for his second consecutive overtime game winner against Augusta. Daubenspeck earned the win for South Carolina, stopping 11 shots in all, while Naumenko earned the point for the Lynx with 38 saves. Brumby finished with 28 saves.
