The Augusta Lynx managed only their second come from behind win this season, but it couldn’t have come at a better time. Treavor Peterson’s first career goal served as the game winner in a 3-2 defeat of the Columbus Cottonmouths Saturday night to keep the Lynx’s playoff hopes alive.
Scott Corbett started the scoring early, splitting the defense and taking a Nick Greenough pass, then tucking it around Columbus goalie Jason Tapp on the stick side to give Augusta a 1-0 lead just 26 seconds into the opening frame. Peterson also picked up an assist on the goal for the Lynx. Columbus would come back on goals by Colin Pepperall at 2:14 and Brad Voth at 8:59 to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period. The Cottonmouths went scoreless on four power play opportunities in the period, while Augusta finished 0-for-2 with the man advantage.
With no scoring in the second period, the teams poised for a pivotal final frame. Augusta started the period with 1:31 of power play time to work with, but were unable to score. Back and forth action would mark the minutes until Louis Goulet was able to tie the game at 2-2 with help from Terry Marchant and Martin Lapointe, beating Tapp blocker side from the slot at 3:54. That goal was followed by Peterson’s goal at 11:12, his first career marker from Corbett which put Augusta up 3-2. Despite a late charge by the Cottonmouths, and nine total power play chances in the game, Jason Saal and company stood tall defensively and held on for the win, giving Peterson the game winning goal. The Lynx finished the game 0-for-7 with the power play, while Saal made 38 saves to earn the win and keep Augusta’s playoff hopes alive. The Lynx are now 24-27-7 on the season, good for 55 points, 16 out of a playoff spot.
Augusta is back in action this Tuesday night against South Carolina at 7:05 pm. The Lynx will return home on March 13th on Shoe Carnival Wheel night against the Florence Pride, with game time at 7:35 pm. Catch all the Lynx hockey action on EAGLE 102!
