The standings say no team in the American Hockey League is better than the Rochester Americans.

At 7-0, they're defying the "experts" who predicted mediocrity, at least early in the season, because the team is so young. It was easy to expect a struggle, too.

When will the fifth estate learn not to talk about streaks?

The Amerks take an ugly loss to the 0-6 Syracuse Crunch. Of interest in the article:

Contrary to what the Florida Panthers believed, defenseman Alexei Semenov has not returned to Russia and hopes he doesn't have to, his agent, Allan Walsh, said on Friday.

Walsh said he had been given permission by Panthers general manager Jacques Martin to seek a trade. Semenov will remain in Florida for at least five more days, Walsh said, and then could return home to Russia if he can't find a spot in the NHL.

Semenov had agreed to stay in Rochester only through Oct. 19, Walsh said. He apparently was given assurances from former Florida GM Mike Keenan that he would not play in the AHL.

Amerks' winning streak is kaput

Craig Anderson suffered a knee injury last weekend. Adam Dennis took the 5-0 loss for the Amerks.

The old adage for the beginning rodeo rider is that when you get thrown off the horse, get right back on.

The Rochester Americans got tossed from their high horse on Friday, so tonight they'll hope to get back on.

After beginning their American Hockey League season with seven consecutive victories, the Amerks fell — and fell hard — on Friday, losing 5-0 at Syracuse to the winless Crunch, now 1-6.

Jean-Marc Pelletier

Jean-Marc Pelletier was flying so far off the pro hockey radar screen that folks who follow his career wondered where he went.

Nowhere, he proved on Sunday.

Pelletier, playing for the first time since the preseason, made 25 saves in regulation and stopped three of four shooters in the shootout as the Rochester Americans defeated the Syracuse Crunch 2-1 at Blue Cross Arena at the War Memorial.

"I'm not going to lie to you, I was pleasantly surprised with how things went," Pelletier said. "But I think working hard in practice and working hard after practice is the reason they went well."
