I read The Gunslinger originally in late 1980s, when it on the library’s shelves next to Christine and The Stand. I enjoyed the series, but I always felt like I'd missed something early in the series. Reading them was like having a compelling dream, but I couldn't remember how it had started. Then I read a review of one of the books that called the series “allegorical,” and I decided I needed to start again at the beginning, to catch what I'd missed, but that I'd wait until after King finished writing the series. (He's done.). Now the graphic novel prequels have me reading the series again (though I'll probably wait for the Marvel books to finish before I start reading the nongraphic novels again).
The writing is great, but the coloring makes me believe in guns and magic. Richard Isanove's colors roar. His startling palette wouldn't work in most books, but I was hooked when I saw the vultures in the second panel of page 1– their eyes, their skin, the meat they're tearing at. The two page spread, two pages later, where Roland stands on a cliff with a weird sky behind him full of purples and oranges and yellows and all, that brought the other Dark Tower books back to to my mind, and I knew I wasn't going to be able to put the graphic novel down until I'd finished it. I wasn't disappointed.

Being a vegetarian has never been easier. Meatless options are available everywhere—from your local fast food chain to your grocery store's freezer aisle—and there are vegetarian alternatives to almost every meat product out there. So there's no reason not to give vegetarianism a try. You'll be helping yourself, animals, and the environment.
Need a little extra nudge? Check out the following facts:
Each vegetarian saves the lives of more than 100 animals per year.
Vegetarians are on average 10 to 20 pounds lighter than meat-eaters.
Many vegetarians report that after cutting meat out of their diets, they feel better, have clearer skin, and have more energy.
At the end of your seven-day pledge, you'll just be starting to experience some of these great benefits. So why not give vegetarianism a try now?
Sign the pledge to give a vegetarian diet a shot for seven days, and we'll send you an e-mail each day of the week with some easy recipes, product recommendations, tips, and, of course, encouragement.

So for those of you who are not pro animal rights, go ahead and stop reading!
For those of us that think it is really pathetic for a corporation to use jokes about killing animals to promote their "luxuries".....please help me do something about this!
Frontier airlines recently decided to start airing a commercial about how they have these fabulous new leather seats, and the other animals on the wings of the plane are making fun of the fact that cows had to die to make leather, and that is why there are no pictures of cows on the tails. Then they take a moment of silence, which is more of a mockery....and discuss how they want a burger.....the commercial finishes by announcing their "new leather seats".
For those of us in Denver, Frontier is stationed right here, there is a lot we can do. For those of you elsewhere, and those of us in Denver, please use the information listed below to contact them and ask to stop airing this commercial....it is sickening!

Petition to Free the Kids from Slavery in Haiti
The children of Haiti need your solidarity and support in telling the Government of Haiti,
The United Nations, and Haiti's Allies - particularly the United States - that there must be
a concerted effort by all to end childhood slavery. People often point to a case or two where
children were placed in another family's care and the children benefited. But these are
few and far between. Too many restavek children go without food, go without education
or medical care. They are often neglected and, sadly, abused. Add your voice to ours in
defense of the children who have no voice.
By signing this petition you agree that:
* The practice of "restaveks", the equivalent of "child slavery", in Haiti should be
condemned immediately.
* Laws protecting children from childhood slavery should be enforced rigorously.
* Every Haitian child should live without the fear of being forced into slavery.
* Haitian children should have the right to live and grow with dignity.
* Haitian parents should have the opportunity to earn a living wage to support their
families with food, shelter and education.
