The Western Michigan university Broncos split a pair at Bowling Green University this weekend. Friday night, the Broncos extended their losing streak, including the two games at the Florida College Hockey Classic, to five, as Western Michigan fell to the Falcons, 5-1.
Chris Clackson opened the scoring in on the power play at 8:13 of the first period. Bronco captain Jeff LoVecchio and Nathan Ansell assisted on the play. Unfortunately, that would be the only goal Western Michigan would manage.
The Falcons came back on the power play in the second period with Kevin Schmidt tying the game at the 6:15 mark. Kai Kantola picked up the assist, one of three points he'd record during the evening. Derek Whitmore put Bowling Green on top at the 19:46 mark with Kantola and Michael Hodgeson getting the assists.
Jonathan Matsumoto, Brandon Svendsen and Tomas Petruska all netted even strength goals in the third, with Matsumo assisting on Petruska's goal at 10:58, a goal that would finish off the scoring for both teams.
Daniel Bellissimo made 30 saves in the losing effort, while Jimmy Spratt only had to kick out 18 Bronco's shots to earn the win. Western Michigan was not just badly outshot, but played undisciplined hockey, spending 31 minutes in the penalty box to the Falcons 14 minutes.
Kanotal would pick up the first star of the game, Spratt the second and Matsumoto the third.
The Western Michigan squad fared better on Saturday night though, as freshman goalie Riley Gill made 37 saves in route to his second shut out of the season.
Paul Szczechura opened the scoring at 6:13 of the first, on an even strength play. Mark Letestu and Jeff Pierce garnered the assists. Pierce tallied just over six minutes later, with Szczechura and Ryan Mahrle helping out. It was a power play goal, with the Falcon's Russ Sinkewich out for interference.
LoVecchio found the back of the net, shorthanded with under two minutes left to play in the first stanza, sending the Broncos to the locker room with a 3-0 lead. BGSU outshot the Broncos 8-10 in the first.
Bowling Green also outshot WMU in the second, 17-11, but again it was the Bronco's snipers who found a way past Spratt. Letestu netted a power play goal at 6:41 with Pierce and Dave Krisky picking up the assists. Szczechura capped off his three point night with just under two minutes left to play in the period with a shorthanded, unassisted tally.
Gill picked up the first star of the game with the shut out, Szczechura the second and Letestu the third.
Matt Clackson (Chris Clackson's brother) was expelled from the game just 11 seconds into the contest for checking from behind. Chris Frank was ejected for fighting in the third period and will miss Friday's contest against the University of Miami (Ohio). The Falcon's Jeremy Bronson was also disqualified in that altercation.
Riley was named the CCHA Goaltender of the Week by the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Monday for his performance.
"Riley is composed and confident in net and this is a great honor for him to win his freshman season," head coach Jim Culhane was quoted as saying in a WMU press release. Aside from his season high 37 save performance, Gill also denied the Falcons on nine power play attempts throughout the night.
Gil was the team MVP and a second-team NAHL All-Star with the Texarkana Bandits last season.
The Broncos start an 8-game homestand this weekend with a pair against the university of Miami Red Hawks. The Hawks are 16-7-1 on the season, 11-3-1 against CCHA teams. They dropped their last game to Michigan State on Saturday night.
