From a Toronto Marlies Press Release:

The Marlies scored early and then rode the hot goaltending of Jean-Francois Racine to victory in a 2-1 shootout win over the San Antonio Rampage on Saturday evening at Ricoh Coliseum. Toronto is back in the winner's circle after being held pointless in consecutive games for the first time since late November.

Toronto opened the night's scoring for the fifth straight game when Brad Leeb deflected a Brendan Bell point-shot over the right shoulder of Rampage starting netminder Karl Goehring at 3:30 of the first period giving the Marlies an early lead. The power-play goal was Leeb's 22nd tally of the season, his highest total since recording 24 goals in 77 games with St. John's in 2002-03. Bell played one of his strongest games of the season in a game in which the Marlies continued to rely heavily on veteran defencemen what with four players at that position currently on recall to the parent Maple Leafs. The Ottawa native had six shots on goal and was named the game's third-star for his efforts. John Pohl also picked-up an assist on the play.

Following a scoreless second period, Randall Gelech tied the game at 1-1 when he lifted a shot over a prone J-F Racine from in-close at 4:09 of the final frame. San Antonio's Goehring was spectacular throughout the evening in helping his teammates get the game to overtime and then made six key saves in the extra-session. The Marlies had a full two-minute power-play when San Antonio defenceman Brad Tiley took an interference penalty 42 seconds into overtime, but they could still not solve Goehring. The Minnesota native's strong night finally went sour when John Pohl and Colin Murphy scored in the shootout to give the home-side the win. Racine stopped the Rampage's Mike Bishai, Layne Ulmer, Jeff Taffe and Eric Chouinard while earning second star honours in the process. Goehring was named the game's first-star in front of 3,219 fans in Toronto.</quote>

The Gwinett Gladiators (Atlanta) took a 5-3 victory of the Pensacola Ice Pilots Saturday night in Georgia. Bobby Cunningham had a goal and two assists, and Brandon Cook and Adam Courchaine each had a goal and an assist for the Pilots who could find little offense against a fast skating Gwinnett squad in the second and third periods.

Pensacola put only four shots on net in the second period. Toronto prospect Todd Ford made 43 saves in the Ice Pilots net as the Gadiators outshot the Maple Leaf's affilate 48 to 28.

Pensacola was without Dave Turon and Steven Later who had been called up to the Marlies.

From a Rampage Press Release:

The San Antonio Rampage collected a goal to prevent Peoria Rivermen goaltender Patrick Lalime's shutout bid as the Rampage fall 5-1 at the AT&T Center Friday night. The Rampage extend their winless streak to three games after a shootout loss on Tuesday night to the Rivermen and hold a 12-26-1-2 record.

Peoria got the game rolling with a goal 16:17 into the opening period off the stick of Colin Hemingway.

The Rampage would tie the game up 1-1 when Eric Chouinard tallied his eighth goal of the season 2:09 into the second period. Ed Hill extended his point-streak to two games with an assist on the lone goal as Jakub Koreis collected his second assist of the season.

The Rivermen rallied back with three consecutive goals throughout the rest of the second period. Mike Glumac's shot deflected off the pads of Karl Goehring over his head into the net at the 10:44 mark. Jay McClement wrapped the puck around the right goal post into the net 40 seconds later to give Peoria the 3-1 lead. With less than a minute left in the period, Mike Mottau gave the Rivermen a three-goal cushion as he tallied his third goal of the season.

The St. Louis Blues' AHL affiliate guaranteed the 5-1 win at the 9:32 mark in the closing period with a Lee Stempniak goal.

Maybe it was the name change on the building but Martin Sonnenberg scored in overtime to give the Rampage a 4-3 victory over the Marlies in front of 5,162 at the AT&T Center.

Toronto put 37 shots on David LeNeveu, while the Rampage only sent 28 J.S. Aubins way and allowed the Marlies five power play chances. San An did managed to capitalize one of their two power play attempts in the third when Pavel Brendl found the net with Bates Battaglia off for the Marlies for Holding.

Tim Jackman recorded a goal and an assist for San Antonio. Mike Bishai also tallied for the home team.

"Well," said Rampage assistant coach Gord Dineen in this moring's edition of the Express News, "this wasn't beautiful hockey. But we found a way to win."

Prior to the game, the Rampage signed former Everblade defenseman Ed Hill and right wing Justin Cox to professional tryout agreements.

Marlies fall in Texas Shoot Out

  • Jan. 14th, 2006 at 10:47 AM

From a Marlies Press Release:

Sometimes you can get caught up in the standings when facing an opponent. Other times, it's the opponent that gets caught up facing you.

The Marlies rallied twice in their first game of a three-in-three weekend, but fell short dropping a 4-3 overtime decision to the San Antonio Rampage at the AT&T Center.

Mike Bishai (7), Tim Jackman (3), Pavel Brendl (10) and Martin Sonnenberg (10) scored for San Antonio. Brad Leeb (14), Kris Newbury (12) and Martin Sagat (5) responded for the Marlies.

The Rampage opened the scoring in the first by capatalizing on their best scoring chance, when Bishai snapped a quick shot over the glove of J.S. Aubin to make it 1-0. Jackman then made it 2-0 just over three minutes into the third, just moments after a Newbury goal was called off, as the official lost sight of a loose puck before it was shot into the net.

Toronto would respond five minutes later when Leeb took a feed from Bates Battaglia and fired a quick snap shot past David LeNeveu to make it 2-1. Newbury tied the game five minutes later, when he spun around and slapped a puck on end past LeNeveu from the face-off circle to make it 2-2.

In the third, Brendl would give the Rampage the lead after some nice work by Pascal Rheaume to take a hit and then feed the puck from behind the goal to Brendl at the side of the net to make it 3-2. Sagat would even the score with seven minutes to go, when he came out from the corner and snapped a high shot over the shoulder of LeNeveu.

In overtime, Sonnenberg was sprung on a breakaway. Jay Harrison raced to catch up and in the ensuing battle for the puck, lost his stick. As Sonnenberg drove the goal, he tried to cut from his right to left and as he did, the loose stick of Harrison caught the puck and redirected it over the arm of Aubin and it for an unfortunate break in OT.

LeNeveu made 34 saves for the win, while Aubin stopped 24 shots in the loss.

Toronto was 1 for 5 on the power play while the Rampage were 1 for 2.

The Griffins got goals from five different players, and former Everblade Eric Manlow picked up two assists, and the Grand Rapid Griffins downed the San Antonio Rampage 5-2 at the SBC Center.

Pavel Brendl and Jakub Koreis both tallied for the Rampage. Head coach Pat Conacher said his team is not responding well to the new rule changes.

The Rampage picked up 10 penalties in the game, and the Griffins used the extra attacker to score on three of those opportunities.

Brendl's goal came on the power play at 6:03 of the third, and cut the Griffin's lead to two, but with Martin Sonnenberg off for slashing, Grand Rapids found the back of the net to close out the scoring.

The Rampage will have a week to work on the rule changes before they host the Toronto Marlies, who won their third straight last night, 4-1 over Rochester.

From a Rampage Press Release:

The San Antonio Rampage out shot the Houston Aeros 39 to 32 but was unable to come up with the win falling to the West Division leading Aeros 5-3 at the SBC Center Thursday night. San Antonio forwards Mike Bishai and Steve Gainey each had a two-point night as Bishai was named number two star of the night.

Houston jumped to a 3-1 lead after the first period. Houston scored first at 10:46 off the stick of Rem Murray. One minute later Patrick O’Sullivan scored his first of three goals on the power-play from Joe Callahan’s roughing penalty. Rampage center Layne Ulmer brought the Rampage within one at 17:14 with help from Gainey and Steve Weidlich as he tallied his first point in his fourth game in a Rampage jersey. O’Sullivan would give the Aeros a two-goal cushion for his second power-play goal of the night with only 20 seconds remaining in the first period to give the Aeros a 3-1 lead.

Rampage defenseman Ray Schultz tallied his first goal of the season 1:43 into the second period with help from Pavel Brendl and Bishai.

O’Sullivan collected his hat trick at the 5:40 mark to give Houston a 4-2 lead. Aeros’ Kirby Law stretched the lead to 5-2 less than a minute later. San Antonio’s Gainey and David Cornacchia would help Bishai tally his sixth goal of the season and close the gap to a two goal difference, 5-3, at the 9:36 mark. Bishai’s goal gave the Rampage their fifth shorthanded goal of the season. The score would hold for the remainder of the game with both teams going scoreless in the closing period.

Worcester IceCats Press Release

The Worcester IceCats attempt at winning three games in three days was stymied in a 2-1 loss to the San Antonio Rampage Sunday at Worcester’s Centrum Centre.

Josh Olson scored both goals for the Rampage, his 13th and 14 of the season. The game-winner came on a five-on-three man advantage after Peter Sejna joined Igor Valeev in the penalty box. Goalie Travis Scott, a former IceCat, made 35 saves for the win.

Sejna avenged that power play goal by scoring his seventh of the season. With 3:09 remaining, he cut the deficit by redirecting Sergei Varlamov’s blueline wrister to get the Sejna has points in seven of his last eight games.

Worcester generated a slew of scoring opportunities after Sejna scored, but Scott slammed the door as the ‘Cats pressured for the equalizer. The ‘Cats maintained second place in the Atlantic Division despite the loss.

Norfolk Admirals Press Release

Denis Shvidki tallied a hat trick to lead the Rampage to a 4-2 victory over the Admirals.

After a scoreless opening period, Igor Radulov got the Blue and Gold on the board early in the second stanza. Matt Ellison shuffled a pass forward to Radulov, who beat two defenders and skated in on a breakaway, sending the puck short-side on Rampage goalie Brent Krahn at the 2:35 mark. San Antonio tied the game when Shvidki scored at 7:07. Though the Admirals were outshooting the Rampage 26-15, they found themselves deadlocked at 1-1 after 40 minutes.

An obstruction call on Marty Wilford for holding the stick gave San Antonio a power play early in the third frame. Lee Goren deflected a Lucas Krajicek shot past netminder Adam Munro for a power play goal at 3:19. Shvidki lit the lamp for the second time at 6:37, extending the Rampage’s lead to two goals. Norfolk pulled back to within one when Lasse Kukkonen found the back of the twine at 14:44. The Admirals pulled Munro for the extra skater in the final minute of play, but a turnover led to a breakaway for Shvidki who found the open net to seal the win for the visitors at 19:30.

Munro made 16 saves for the Admirals while Krahn had 35 stops for the Rampage.
